At just after 1:30 PM an adult received a text message from a student on a school bus that a fellow student had a gun in their backpack. The parent contacted Lake Havasu City Police Department. After that initial contact, the adult received an updated text message saying the student was holding the gun in his hand. The school bus was identified and located on HWY 95 just north of North Palo Verde, where officers conducted a traffic stop and evacuated all students from the bus. Contact was made with the suspect student, identified only as a Middle School student, and a BB Gun was located in the students’ backpack. The student was taken into custody and Lake Havasu City Police Department is pursuing charges which will be announced at a later time.
No threats against fellow students were made. Parents of students on the bus have been notified by Police Officers on scene, then students were placed back on the bus.
REVISION:. Video has surfaced which reflects the student DID make a threat to students. This video has been turned over to LHCPD and detectives are reviewing it.
UPDATE FROM PD AT 4:32 pm: The juvenile is currently being charged with two counts of aggravated assault based on the initial investigation, however the investigation is still ongoing in light of the video recently received.
UPDATE 3/16 FROM LHCPD: As a result of follow up to the video, a second 14-year-old male middle school student was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault. The juvenile was booked into juvenile detention
