Mohave County Sheriff’s Waterways deputies responded to an injury boat accident early Wednesday (8/31) evening. Approximately 6:15 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the area of Body Beach in Lake Havasu, just south of Rotary Park. Upon arrival, off the shore of Body Beach several subjects were tending to an injured person in the water. Investigations determined that Michael Scornaienchi, 55, of Fircrest, Washington and part-time Lake Havasu City resident was operating and the sole occupant of a 2015 7-foot stand up personal watercraft when he was ejected from the watercraft. Scornaienchi was transported to Havasu Regional Medical Center by ambulance with neck and spinal injuries.
Scornaienchi was riding in the area of the race buoys traveling at a high rate of speed when his PWC inadvertently shut off, thereby causing sudden deceleration which caused Scornaienchi to be ejected. Scornaienchi advised that he was traveling approximately 55 miles per hour when the incident occurred. After an inspection of the watercraft, it was determined that the fuel tank was empty and that loss of fuel was the cause for the PWC shutting off.
Scornaienchi was wearing a properly sized personal flotation device which held him on the surface of the water until good Samaritans arrived to help him.
