At approximately 1:25 pm on Saturday, October 18, 2014 Lake Havasu City Fire units were dispatched to a reported boat explosion at the launch ramp area of the Lake Havasu Marina located at 1100 McCulloch Blvd. Initial calls to 911 stated that the occupants were thrown from the boat and that the fire was in close proximity to the gas docks. Two engine companies responded to the launch ramp area for immediate fire attack and medical aid, while two additional crews were dispatched to the fire boat housed at Contact Point. The Battalion Chief who also responded to the Marina provided incident command and reported the fire under control at 1:41 pm.
The owner stated that the boat had just been filled with fuel. The boat was in the process of being launched and the owner confirmed using the blower prior to starting the motor. The owner, upon discovering the fire tossed his daughter who was seated next to the engine compartment into the lake in order to avoid the flames and jumped in after her. Both parties swam to a nearby dock and exited the lake where they were later assessed and treated by LHCFD. One individual was treated and transported by AMR to Havasu Regional Medical Center for minor burns.
