At approximately 5:20 a.m. on Wednesday, September 5, 2018, a fire was reported in the kitchen of one unit in a multi-unit apartment complex located near the 2000 block of Smoketree Ave. N. The LHCFD dispatch center received multiple 9-1-1 calls stating that the kitchen was on fire and occupants were attempting to get out of the unit and evacuate other units. Four Engine Companies, one Truck Company, one Division Chief, and two Battalion Chiefs responded to the fire and gained control of the fire within 14 minutes. The occupants of the apartment evacuated safely. One cat was rescued from the fire unit during the initial primary search. There were no reported injuries to the firefighters or civilians. Five CERT members responded to the fire to assist with Rehab duties for the firefighters. Crews remained on the scene an additional 2 hours conducting salvage operations. Fire damage was confined to the kitchen and living room of one unit with extensive heat and smoke damage throughout the remainder of the apartment. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
