Official release: Prestige Assisted Living fire Tuesday evening

Posted on Thursday, March 1st, 2018 at 7:37 PM

At approximately 7:42 p.m., Tuesday, February 27, a fire alarm system reported a fire at the Prestige Assisted Living on Smoketree Avenue. Employees called 9-1-1 shortly after the alarms sounded, confirming there was a fire in a stairwell light. Police officers arrived on scene and extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher.

The first arriving fire company reported smoke had filled the stairwell and evacuation efforts would need to continue. CERT responded and assisted with the evacuation to the lobby area. Four Engine Companies, one Truck Company, and a Battalion Chief responded to the fire and were able to gain control of the situation within 30 minutes. There were no reported injuries. Crews remained on scene an additional hour conducting salvage operations. Damages were confined to the stairwell area. The cause of the fire was found to be a light ballast.

Most of the information in this article is false. The police officers did NOT put the fire out! A good samaritan actually put the fire out! Next thing, it wasn’t a lighting ballast that caught fire, it was a back up battery in the light fixture that caught fire. This article also neglects to tell the public that the fire department was already out at prestige once before for this same issue on the same evening. They saw the fixture had already caught fire, removed the bulbs from it, thermaled it with their FLIR camera and said it was good to go….there was still power going to this fixture when they packed up and left…they deemed it “good to go” and left the scene…within less than 10 minutes after them leaving the fixture caught fire for a second time! At which time, a good samaritan, NOT A POLICEMAN OR FIREFIGHTER, put the fire out with the fire extinguisher! How do I know this info you ask? Because I was there and I was the one who put the fire out!!
